Vicenza, the city of Palladio, was placed on the Unesco World Heritage List in December 1994.
In 1972 the General UNESCO Conference adopted the Convention concerning the protection of the cultural and natural World Heritage. This convention, undersigned so far by 134 countries, has the purpose of defining the world heritage with a list of things and places of such exceptional interest and universal value that their protection is of imperative importance for the whole of humanity.
In signing the Convention the States promise to preserve with the aid of the international community what is considered of exceptional worth on their land. The organism responsible for the Convention is the World Heritage Committee which runs the Fund of the same name for the protection of the World Heritage List.
Something of cultural value, to be eligible for the List, must be original and have exercised a great influence on human culture, or it must be the bearer of unique testimony, or be associated with ideas of universal significance.
