Palazzo Barbaran
The palazzo built for Count Montano Barbaran is living a new lease of life after its long restoration; it now houses the "Antonio Palladio International Architectural Centre".
As Palladio himself tells us, he was working on this building at the same time as the publication of his Treatise (1569-70). The solemn facade is enriched by a double Ionic (lower section) and Corinthian (upper section) row of columns, and by decorations on the sides of the "piano nobile" windows. The inside rooms and the main hall on the ground floor are also richly stuccoed. The attic floor has square windows and small columns. The asymmetry of the facade is due to the later purchase of another area to build another two inter-columns. In planning this building, Palladio managed to adapt its orthogonal structure to the site and the system of streets surrounding it.
