Palazzo Capra

now Piovini

This small building commissioned by Count Giovanni Antonio Capra is one of Andrea Palladio's early works and can be dated between 1540 and 1545. Construction work seems to have been completed only in 1567. The facade, unfortunately changed by restoration work for commercial reasons, has at its centre the main entrance portal framed by two fluted Ionic columns. On a line with the arch, on the "piano nobile", behind the balcony, four tapered Corinthian pilasters are crowned by a triangular pediment. Flanking them, two windows open on each floor; while the "piano nobile" is graced with aedicules.
In the 17th century the Piovini family raised their Piazza Castello residence according to a design by Antonio Pizzocaro, and the Palladian building underwent a drastic reordering inside which destroyed its initial structure.
