This palazzo was designed by Palladio in 1550 and is universally recognised as one of his greatest works. The building, incomplete, was partly built during Palladio's lifetime, and work on it continued into the 17th century, while the Western body of the courtyard was completed in the 19th century.
However, Giovanni Miglioranza demolished the house next door towards Corso Palladio and changed the original configuration.
Andrea Palladio's design for this building is extraordinary, and so is its position: it stands in a key position for communications, both by water and on land, between Vicenza and the eastern Veneto. Indeed, in the area of what is now Piazza Matteotti, at that time called the "island", the river Retrone joined the Bacchiglione, which was where Vicenza had its port.
Notice how the upper part of the facade, with the closed central body and the two side loggias, repeats the plan of the suburban residence. The interiors still have their 16th century frescoes by Domenico Brusasorci, Battista Zelotti, and others.
