Palazzi Gualdo

These two Palazzi, a backdrop to the little Piazza Gualdo, have often be taken to be one palazzo because of the unbroken cornice and the ashlared base.
The first palazzo, the right-hand one, is attributed to Giacomo and Giovanni da Porlezza (beginning of the 16th century). During recent restoration the loggias on the "piano nobile" were re-opened and the sculptured stone decorations by Nanto were put right. Above the entrance portal Nicolé Gualdo in 1634 erected a monument to his friend Francesco Molino, a senator of the Serenissima and Governor of Crete. The bust, surrounded by friezes depicting battle scenes, is attributed to the Albanese school. Inside there are stuccoed and frescoed halls.
Last century the palazzo was enlarged, as can be seen from the facade.
The second Gualdo palazzo flanking the first to the left is of a later date. It probably goes back to the years 1530-40 and is also the work of the school of Da Porlezza (or of the Pedemuro).
The remains of an earlier Gothic building have been discovered in the masonry of the courtyard.
Inside, the frescoes of the main hall evoke the glory of the Gualdos and their relations with Charles V in the period of his stay at Monteccchio Maggiore.
