Palazzo Thiene
now the Banca Popolare di Vicenza
The design of the Palazzo Thiene was published by Andrea Palladio in his treatise "The Four Books of Architecture".
The grandiose design portrays a building with a square ground-plan which was to occupy the area of the present block Contrà San Gaetano Thiene, Stradella Banca Popolare, Contrà Porti and Corso Palladio. Between 1556 and 1558 a small section was built at the corner of Contrà San Gaetano Thiene and Stradella Banca Popolare.
The existing facade is of two floors: the lower has rustic ashlar in plastered stone and bricks, while the upper, a light ashlar, has Corinthian pilasters and windows. These latter are of the tabernacle type: a small alternately arched and triangular pediment crowns two Ionic order columns. Only two sides of the initially planned courtyard were actually erected.
Next to this building is the 16th century Palazzo Thiene by Lorenzo da Bologna.
