Arco delle Scalette

The Arco delle Scalette (the Arch of the Steps) was built at Porta Monte in 1595. Palladio had conceived it around 1576, probably as access to the Marian Sanctuary of Monte Berico, drawing inspiration from triumphal arches. The architect in fact had been called upon also to enlarge the 15th century church, and the arch was almost certainly supposed to be the natural "trait d'union" with the new basilica and the city. It was built fifteen years after the death of Palladio on the wish of the Capitanio Giacomo Bragadin, and construction work was entrusted to Francesco Albanese.
There is a painting of "The Annunciation" by Orazio Marinali.
