Giardino Salvi

The Giardino Salvi were designed by Leonardo Valmarana as "a place of dalliance, rest, nostalgia and reflection" just outside the walls. In 1592 it was opened to the public, and is now city council property.
It was arranged as an Italian garden with geometrical plots and a maze, as can be seen from contemporary sources like the 18th century engraving by Cristofaro dall'Acqua.
In the 19th century, Romantic taste took over, and it was changed into an English garden.
Two loggias look out over it. One is the Valmarana Loggia of the end of the 16th century, the second is a loggia designed by Baldassare Longhena in 1649.
The monumental entrance to the garden from piazzale De Gasperi is also by the hand of Longhena (1645).
In the first years of this century the Western side was closed off by the primary school building.
