Porticoes of Monte Berico

The Porticoes ascend from Vicenza to the Sanctuary of Monte Berico. Built between 1746 and 1780 and designed by Francesco Muttoni, they consist of 150 arches and 15 chapels, along a total length of 700 metres.
Between the two arms stands the Chapel of the Crucifixion, from which comes the name of the site - "al Cristo". The Chapel substitutes a more ancient one of the same name, existing further up, probably demolished because it was obstructing building work on the porticoes.
They were reconstructed after the landslide of 1819 which caused the destruction of about ten of the porticoes.
The architecture of the Porticoes is chaste, almost with an Enlightenment-like rigour. The only decorations, in the lunettes of the chapels, are from a later period (1899-1900) by Vittorio BresSanin and Vincenzo De Stefani, and represent the Mysteries of the Rosary.
