Villa Trissino

now Trettenero

Between 1531 and 1538 Trissino renovated a Gothic building that once belonged to the Valmarana family. According to tradition it was during work on Villa Trissino that the nobleman met the "stonemason" Andrea "son of Piero della Gondola", whom he called Palladio, taking the name from an angel described in a poem of his. The building is the work of Trissino himself, from his profound knowledge of early 6th century Roman architecture. The two-floor facade is framed by two side towers. The central section of the facade, with six Ionic order pilasters, has three central arches on the lower floor with two round windows and two curved. The "piano nobile", also with six Corinthian order pilasters, has three aedicules lined up with the arches below, while two niches hold statues. At one time the building was surrounded by a garden with statues and rivulets.
