The Abbey of St Augustine stands on the site of the probably 8th century Longobard oratory of San Desiderio. All that remains of the ancient votive chapel is a trace or two in the wall of the facade of the present abbey. This was built between 1322 and 1357 by the Augustinian friars together with a small cloistered convent. During the 15th century the abbey went to the Canons of St George under San Lorenzo Giustiniani. After the suppression of the monastery (1668) the whole place fell into ruin. The convent collapsed in 1800 and the church was closed in 1899.
In the early 20th century there was a first restoration, completed in the 40s, which led to the reopening of the church. The cloister was built up in 1951 by using the 18th century columns of the choir knocked down during the previous restoration work.
The interior, with one single nave, is important for its historical and artistic patrimony, containing frescoes which hark back to the school of Tommaso da Modena, a polyptych of 1404 by Battista da Vicenza, a giant late 14th century fresco of St Christopher, and an early 15th century wooden crucifix in front of which San Lorenzo Giustiniani is said to have prayed.
