The Tempio di San Lorenzo was built up against the first town walls between 1280 and 1300 by the Franciscan Minor friars. On the site of the previous chapel of San Lorenzo the Franciscans also built their own convent, which was to be suppressed later by Napoleonic decree.
The church with its three naves is, together with Santa Corona, one of the most important monuments of sacred Gothic in Vicenza, and reaches its highest expression in the portal, the work of Andriolo de Santi in 1344. In the lunette of the portal we see the Madonna with Child, St Francis, San Lorenzo and the person who ordered the work, Pietro da Marano.
The interior contains numerous funereal monuments of illustrious Vicenza families. The right transept houses the altar of the noble Pojana family.
There are also frescoes by Benedetto Montagna, works by Francesco Pittoni, Giovanni Antonio Fumiani and Giulio Carpioni, and a sculptured group by Antonino da Venezia.
One painting by Alessandro Maganza is now kept in the Pinacoteca of Palazzo Chiericati: "The Communion of San Bonaventura".
The Renaissance cloister attached has parts dating back to an older building, and also a 14th century well-curb.
The church is officiated by the Conventual Fathers.
