Church of St Mark

The Church of St Mark, begun in 1720 and consecrated in 1727, was built by the Barefooted Carmelites. It owes its name to one of the seven chapels of Vicenza, the ancient Chapel of St Mark, that probably stood on the site of the present Piazzetta San Marco. In the early 19th century, after the Napoleonic restructuring of the parishes, the parish of St Mark was transferred to the Church of San Girolamo agli Scalzi and the church took the name of the parish.
The Brescia architect Corbellini was responsible for the double-order monumental facade (1756) with its clear Baroque reminiscences. The previous project by Ottone Calderari had been turned down and was successively taken up again by Antonio Piovene for the Church of the Filippini.
The interior takes its inspiration from the Chiesa della Pace in Brescia by the Venetian Giorgio Massari. It has a single nave with four side chapels;
another two chapels are to be found in the spacious presbytery.

Among the paintings are: "The Ecstasy of St Teresa" by Sebastiano Ricci (1725) and "The Glory of San Girolamo" by Antonio de' Pieri, "St Peter and San Carlo Borromeo with the Holy Trinity", "Jesus taken from the Cross between the Madonna and Saints John and Nicholas" by Alessandro Maganza, and "San Girolamo in Meditation" by Giovan Battista Maganza (the Elder).
The nearby convent now houses the Institute of the Beata Vergine Maria.
