The Church of St Stephen was once one of the seven chapels that first depending on the urban parish and then evolved into independent parishes. It is mentioned in 12th century documents.
The present church was built between 1695 and 1740 by Carlo Borella on the basis of designs "sent from Rome". The dome was built by Vittorio Barichella in 1895. The late-16th century style facade is adorned with five statues by Giacomo Cassetti. Inside the church we find paintings by Alessandro Maganza ("The Baptism of Christ"), Francesco Maffei's "Miraculous Healing by San Gaetano" and "Death of San Gaetano", Palma the Elder's "Madonna and Saints", Giovanni Battista Maganza the Elder's "The Stoning of St Stephen", Vincenzo Maganza's "Angels playing Music", Antonio Arrigoni's "The Appearance of the Child Jesus to St Anthony" and Giacomo Ciesa's "Martyrdom of San Lorenzo" and "Stoning of San Lorenzo".
The church also has a painting of St Paul attributed to Jacopo Tintoretto, but which from recent studies seems more likely to be the work of his son Domenico.
The high altar's rich tabernacle by Domenico Angeli is adorned with round insets painted on a gold background by Giandomenico Tiepolo (in the past attributed to Gianbattista Tiepolo).
