Oratory of the Gonfalone
or del Duomo
The Oratory of the Gonfalone was built as the place of worship of the Confraternity of the same name in 1596. It has been attributed, without any foundation, to Girolamo Albanese, and draws its inspiration from a Palladian scheme. It underwent heavy bombing in 1945. Inside, the high altar by the Albanese school with its relief altarpiece depicting the Assumption is the only original work. The precious paintings by Maganza, Andrea Vicentino and other 17th century painters, as well as the fine stuccoes, have been completely destroyed. Today there are still two altarpieces by Giovan Battista Zelotti ("The Miracle of the Fishes" and "The Fall of St Paul") and some paintings by the school of Maganza del Duomo.
