Gothic Vicenza

Vicenza, although the "city of Palladio" and known as such throughout the world, also boasts numerous and interesting Gothic buildings, both civil and religious.
The itinerary proposed does not go in chronological order but privileges a possible town route linking the greatest buildings dating back to this period.
The starting point is the Tempio di San Lorenzo, which has always belonged to the Franciscans. From here we take the side street which leads to Contrada San Marcello to see the interesting portal of the Oratory of St Christopher. Going along Stradella Filippini we arrive at Corso Palladio. Proceeding east, a short way after passing the crossing with Corso Fogazzaro and Contrà Battisti we note on the left Palazzo Braschi-Brunello. Going on, we turn left into Contrà Porti where there are some of the finest facades of the period: Palazzo Porto-Bertolini, Palazzo Porto Breganze and Palazzo Porto-Colleoni. In the parallel Contrà Zanella we see Palazzo Sesso-Zen-Fontana. We go up Contrà Santo Stefano and arrive at Santa Corona, built by the Dominicans, one of the most important orders of the time.
Coming back on to Corso Palladio we proceed for a few metres and see Palazzo Caldogno Franceschini da Schio (Ca' d'Oro). We take Contrà Santa Barbara to arrive in Piazza dei Signori where we can visit the Gothic parts of the Basilica and, in Piazza Biade, the Chiesa dei Servi. We descend down Contrà Gazzolle and at the corner between the bridge of San Michele and Contrà Piancoli we see the facades of the Palazzo Garzadori-Braga. Here we can go towards Contrà San Paolo and from this reach Contrà Pigafetta where there is the facade of the house with the same name, one of the most characteristic of the time. Turning back, we go past the Ponte San Paolo and in Contrà Lioy we see Palazzo Garzadori-Fattore. Going back up from Ponte San Michele into Contrà Piancoli we proceed from this towards the Barche district (to the south), an area very rich in palazzi of this period. Don't miss the Ospedale di San Valentino.
The itinerary ends in Contrà XX Settembre. If you wish to go a short way north-east going past the Ponte degli Angeli you can see a fine facade of the Palazzo Regaù.
