Vicenza and Tiepolo

The Tiepolo itinerary in Vicenza covers 8 places of interest, 4 of which outside town. These places contain frescoes and paintings in villas, churches and museums. The itinerary is organised mainly according to the chronological order of the works.
In 1734 Tiepolo painted the frescoes on the stairway and in the hall of honour in the Villa Loschi Zileri at MonteViale.
In Villa Cordellina at Montecchio Maggiore, 11 km from Vicenza on the main road SS. 11 to Verona, Tiepolo painted in 1743 the frescoes of the central hall and a collection of paintings now in part housed in the museum of Palazzo Chiericati.
The frescoes of Villa Valmarana and the Lodge date back to 1757 and represent an important moment in the work of Tiepolo, who worked here with his son Giandomenico.
These works have given art criticism the chance to compare the work of two artists. There are also paintings decorating the tabernacle in the Church of St Stephen in Vicenza: they are the Tryptych of 1758-60 by Giandomenico Tiepolo with parts painted by his father in the central section (the soldiers).
In the Pinacoteca of Palazzo Chiericati are preserved two paintings by Giambattista: "The Immaculate Virgin" of 1735, coming from the Church of Araceli, and "Time discovering Truth", painted for Villa Cordellina (1743-44); and a canvas by Giandomenico: "The Beheading of the Baptist".

The itinerary continues out of town: in the Parish of Rampazzo, in the Commune of Camisano Vicentino (8 km from Vicenza on the main road SS. 11 towards Padua), we find the altarpiece of "The Apotheosis of San Gaetano" by Giambattista.
In the Parish of Noventa Vicentina, 45 km from Vicenza on the SS. 247 (Riviera Berica) (Church of Santi Vito, Modesto e Crescenzia) we can see the altarpiece dedicated to Santi Rocco e Sebastiano (1758-60), again by Giambattista.
Last of all, the Civic Museum of Bassano del Grappa, 35 km from Vicenza (SS. 248 Marosticana) has drawings by Giambattista and Giandomenico, a painting by Giambattista, "The Circumcision" from the years 1731-32, and a "Madonna with Child" by Giandomenico.
